Total body skin exam (tbse)

We check all your skin’s surface for any irregular conditions focusiong mainly on skin cáncer screening but also addressing benign lesions that need attention. We will thoroughly check from head to toe including the hard to reach areas of the body that you might not be able to monitor.¿Con qué frecuencia se recomienda un examen de piel de todo el cuerpo? La Academia Americana de Dermatología recomienda hacerlo al menos una vez al año después de los 40 años, pero antes en pacientes con factores de riesgo como historia personal o familiar de cáncer de piel, exposición al sol o inmunosupresión

How often is a total body skin exam recommended?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends getting a TBSE at least once a year after the age of 40, but sooner in patients with risk factors like having personal or family history of skin cancer, sun exposure or immunesupression.

Why is it important to get a TBSE?

Early detection of potential issues can save your life or minimize long-term damage since most skin cancers are curable if caught early.

How to prepare for a TBSE and what to expect

To make sure your total body skin exam is as thorough as possible, refrain from wearing any makeup or nail polish and keep your hair loose. If you have any specific concerns, let us know at the beginning of your appointment. Be prepared to answer questions about your family history of skin cáncer.

The appointment takes 20-30 minutes, we will ask you to remove glasses, watch, jewlery, undress (You can remove your underwear or leave it on) includding shoes and socks and we will ask you to lie down on an exam bed and cover with a blanket that we will remove systematically. (We will step out of the room while you do this)

We will examine the entire surface of your skin with our naked eye and also with a Dermascope (Special magnifying glass device) and make note of any spots that need monitoring or closer examination.

If we have concerns about a particular rash or mole, we might take a sample of your skin right away for testing or schedule a follow-up appointment depending on the type of biopsy needed.
